5 things to do if you suffer excessive Hair loss and Breakage

1) Check if your hair needs a Protein treatment

The Hair shaft (visible part of the hair) is made up of 95% protein. This Protein is called Keratin and its built up with 18 amino acids  such as proline, threonine, leucine, cysteine and arginine.

Think of Hair Keratin as a necklace and the amino acids as beads that make up this necklace.

Keratin protein gives the hair strength and suppleness; but daily styling activities like combing, braiding and heat can compromise the protein structure  and chains of amino acids that make up hair Keratin

If the protein chains are broken, the hair becomes brittle, fragile and breaks easily; hence its important to consider a protein treatment when experiencing extreme breakage.

Hydrolyzed proteins are the best form of proteins for treating damaged and Broken hair

2) Autopsy your hair routine

Something about your hair routine could be causing the breakage

  • Is your hair always pulled tight into pony tails?
  • Do you make hairstyles that put pressure on your scalp?
  • Do you moisturize appropriately – With water based conditioners , before using an oil?
  • Are you Afraid of washing your hair?  Many naturals fear that the shampoo will cause their hair to dry out , hence they put off hair wash day. This results in buildup and scalp inflammation

3) Check that you are drinking enough water

Water is the energy source for all the cells  in the body including the hair growth cells (Dermal papilla)

When the body is dehydrated, Hair growth cells are not able to grow and vascularize; this can lead to stunted hair growth

4) Try Herbal rinses

Until the advent of Chemistry in 16th century, Plants had been the source of treatment and prophylaxis for centuries. Historically, it was closely linked to food and spices- hence the popularity of Ayurveda with many food-based Herbs.  Infact, The Ancient Greek physician, Hippocrates, is credited with saying, “Let food be your medicine, and medicine be your food.”

Herbs like Neem Leaves, Burdock Roots and Stinging Nettle have anti inflammatory and anti oxidant properties that are good for the hair
