5 Natural Oils Scientifically Proven to promote Hair Growth

First of all, Lets clarify what exactly we mean by the term “natural’

Natural Hair Growth oils refer to the oils extracted through natural methods like steam distillation or cold press, hence they remain in their purest form and has not been mixed with harsh chemicals.

Some large scale manufacturers use chemical solvents like petroleum Ether or Hexane to extract essential and carrier oils; As a result, such oils ,may contain some dots of chemical impurities that might reduce its quality and potency.

From this perspective, natural hair growth oils simply mean oils that have not been altered in the laboratory in the process of extraction, bottling and preservation.

1- Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary Essential oil contains carnosic acid which can stimulate blood circulation to hair follicles, boost cell turnover and repair tissue damage

With its anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties, Rosemary helps maintain a healthy scalp, which is essential for optimal hair growth.

Rosemary essential oil is a natural DHT blocker. DHT is a key hormone that contributes to male pattern baldness. By preventing DHT from binding to your follicles, Rosemary Essential oils can slow hair loss and possibly stimulate hair growth.

Clinical studies on rosemary

  • A  (2023 study) compared the effects of applying 1% rosemary-oil hair lotion with 2 percent minoxidil (the active ingredient in Rogaine) on mice,  finding that they provided similar results for hair growth.
  •  Another  (2013 trial) on mice with Alopecia (aka male- or female-pattern hair loss) found topical rosemary oil could help promote hair-regrowth.
  • A commonly cited 2015 study compared rosemary oil to 2 percent minoxidil when used on men with genetic androgen-related hair loss for six months. In this study, there were very little differences in the amount of hair growth between both groups.

2- Peppermint Essential  oil:  ( PEO)

Peppermint oil is an essential oil for Hair growth extracted from the peppermint leaf.

peppermint essential oils help with increased blood flow to the scalp thanks to Menthol a key component of peppermint oil which dilates the blood vessels to allow more nutrients and oxygen to flow to the scalp

In addition, peppermint oil may increase insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) . This growth factor regulates the hair growth cycle, encouraging follicles to stay in the anagen (growth) phase for longer:

Clinical studies on peppermint Essential Oil (2014)

  • A 2014 study suggest that 3% Peppermint Essential Oil facilitates Hair growth by promoting the conservation of vascularization of hair dermal papilla, which may contribute to the induction of early anagen stage.
  • In addition, peppermint essential oil (PEO) effectively stimulated hair growth in an animal model via several mechanisms and thus could be used as a therapeutic or preventive alternative medicine for Hair loss in humans.
  • Animal studies suggest 3% peppermint oil may boost hair growth even more than other proven formulas like Minoxidil
  •  The same study showed peppermint oil increased hair growth by 92% over four weeks (in the same period, Minoxidil increased growth by 55%).

 3- lavender Essential oil

Lavender essential oil is a perfect relaxant widely used in aromatherapy methods

Contains antiseptic properties that serves many benefits to the scalp – Like oil control,  pH balance, scalp cleansing , eliminates dandruff and fights inflammation

Lavender is also a good natural conditioner, as it provides softness, texture and  reduces hair frizz and adds shine to the hair.

Lavender essential oil is a natural remedy that can benefit your hair in many ways. It can promote hair growth, prevent hair loss, improve scalp health,

Clinical studies on Lavender

  • One study published in the Archives of Dermatology in 1998 found that a blend of essential oils, including lavender, when massaged daily onto the scalp, showed some improvement in Hair Loss over a period of seven months in people with Alopecia Areata.
  • Another study published in the Toxicological Research journal in 2016 suggested that lavender oil may have hair growth-promoting effects in mice.
  • However, it’s important to note that these studies are limited in scope and more research is necessary to establish the effectiveness of lavender essential oil for promoting hair growth in humans.

4- Coconut oil

Coconut Oil contains lauric acid which has a strong affinity to the Hair proteins . This means coconut oil easily penetrates the Hair shaft more than most carrier Oils

The penetrating properties of Coconut oils means it can easily moisturize and strengthen the hair shaft, reduce protein loss and preventing damage.

Additionally, its antimicrobial properties support scalp health, and improved circulation aids in delivering essential nutrients to hair follicles. These combined effects create an environment that can potentially enhance hair growth over time.

Clinical studies of coconut oil

The first study was conducted in 2003 by Rele and Mohile at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Mumbai, India.

Coconut oil was found to reduce protein loss in both damaged and undamaged hair when used as a pre-wash and post-wash grooming product. This effect was attributed to its chemical structure, which allows it to penetrate the hair shaft.

In 2010, A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science. Coconut oil was shown to significantly reduce protein loss from hair when used as a pre-wash and post-wash grooming product, compared to mineral oil and sunflower oil.

These studies collectively suggest that coconut oil has beneficial effects on hair health, including reducing protein loss, enhancing hair strength, and potentially promoting growth indirectly by preventing damage. However, more research is needed to conclusively determine its direct impact on hair growth.

5- castor oil

Let’s start with the basics. According to Dr. Joshua Zeichner, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, castor oil is an oil derived through cold-pressing the seeds or beans of the castor plant, which is found in Africa, India and South America.

“Castor oil is loaded with ricinoleic acid, a potent antioxidant that protects the skin from free radical damage that causes collagen damage and wrinkles,” explains Zeichner. “It contains fatty acids [that] naturally have emollient benefits to hydrate and soothe the skin.”

Dr. Marisa Garshick, another board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, adds that in addition to antioxidants and fatty acids, castor oil is also rich in protein and other beneficial nutrients. “As a result, it can be helpful for the skin, scalp and hair,” she says. “Castor oil provides hydration and conditions the hair since it’s rich in ricinoleic acid and fatty acids, which serve as natural emollients for the hair.”

Does castor oil grow hair?

“Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid, a type of fatty acid, which may boost circulation in the scalp and subsequently promote healthier and stronger hair, but there is no conclusive evidence that castor oil can promote hair regrowth,” confirms Garshick. “However, anecdotally, people have noticed improvement, and since it has antimicrobial and antifungal properties and helps to strengthen the hair and nourish the scalp, it promotes a healthy environment for hair regrowth.”

Essential oils should be diluted with a carrier oil like Olive oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil or coconut oil. These oils can be massaged gently into the scalp rubbing gently in circular motions
